What is Autism?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction, accompanied by restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities.

The signs of ASD are usually evident in early childhood. Though it is still considered a lifelong diagnosis, with appropriate early intervention, individuals with ASD can lead productive, inclusive, and fulfilling lives.

In the past, ASD has been described as a very puzzling and complex disorder. Though a great deal of its mystery has yet to be uncovered, our understanding has evolved over the years, so has the way we define, diagnose, and treat ASD. Many children with ASD do well in school, participate in activities they enjoy, go on to college, and are employed in adulthood.

ACTT celebrates the many positive attributes and strengths of autistics and will continue to advocate for evidence based practice to assist with connecting families with the best supports and creating meaningful change.

Empowering Neurodivergent Learners

At Autism Connect of Trinidad and Tobago, we believe that every autistic child is full of potential. Instead of focusing on deficits, we emphasize strengths-based support that helps children thrive in their own way.

A core principle we stand by is “connection before correction.” Before addressing challenges, we prioritize building trust, understanding, and meaningful relationships. When children feel safe, seen, and valued, they are more likely to engage, learn, and develop new skills.

By focusing on individual strengths, interests, and communication styles, we empower autistic learners to grow in confidence and independence. Through this approach, we help families, educators, and communities create spaces where neurodivergent children feel truly supported and included.
